Getting high quality, restorative sleep shouldn’t have to feel like a nightly battle. Yet for many people experiencing insomnia, sleep is often poor or even nonexistent. With the right approach, it’s possible to rebuild healthy, sustainable sleep.
Insomnia involves persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking earlier than intended, or struggling to get restorative sleep despite having adequate opportunity for necessary sleep. Over time, chronic insomnia can impact mood, concentration, energy, work, relationships, and overall quality of life.
For many people, insomnia also creates an increasingly stressful relationship with sleep itself. Those suffering from insomnia may begin watching the clock, calculating how many hours remain before morning, going to bed earlier to “catch up,” sleeping later when possible, or experiencing daytime worry about whether they will sleep that night. Unfortunately, some of these natural ways of compensating for poor sleep can unintentionally make insomnia more persistent.
There are many approaches to treating insomnia, including medical management through medication or lifestyle changes. The most effective and preferred treatment for insomnia is CBT-I, an evidence-based therapy designed specifically for chronic insomnia.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, commonly called CBT-I, is a structured, evidence-based treatment approach for managing chronic insomnia.
CBT-I helps identify and change behavioral and cognitive patterns that interfere with the body’s natural ability to sleep. Treatment may include strengthening the connection between bed and sleep, regulating the sleep-wake schedule, building healthy sleep drive, addressing unhelpful beliefs and fears about sleep, and learning to respond differently when sleep does not happen as planned.
Unlike approaches that focus only on relaxation or general sleep hygiene, CBT-I targets the processes that maintain insomnia. Treatment is collaborative and individualized, with strategies tailored to each person’s sleep patterns, circumstances, and needs.
